Asian Stereotypes

FOX NEWS CLIP ASIANS THE WAY THEY ACT

This newscaster, who is asian, is grouping all her "fellow asian americans: together as she talks about Hillary Clintons fundraising campaign, and how they are playing the race card, by grouping them all together. By doing this type of the stuff on this news it makes it very hard for people of other cultures to be accepted and they start to use negative resistance and compare themself to the dominant culture. It makes it very difficult to practice biculturism , which helps an individual function well in both their own culture, and dominant culture. By grouping everoyone in one race also practices racism, which stereotypes all indiviudals in that culture.

FOX NEWS CLIPS "EYES LIKE THIS"

I have an asian friend who gets very offended whenever people try to squint their eyes to compare themselves to asians. This is extremely racist and it makes some asians very uncomfortable. It especially makes asians feel uncomfortable here because they are the minority culture, and the majority culture dont have eyes like that, so if a child was in a classroom and saw this, they might feel hurt and emberassed because they are different than their peers.

MILEY CYRUS PHOTO SCANDAL

Miley Cyrus was recently accused of racism after she and a group of her friends pulled their eyes back to imitate what asian eyes look like. The OCA, which is a group dedicated to advancing the social, political, and economic well being of Asian Pacific Americans is very upset at this photo, because it is offensive and a stereotypical gesture. The OCA are demanding an apology from Miley. Just imagine being a young asian girl, who loved Miley Cyrus, and then you see a photo of her making fun of your own culture... that would be very hurtful. It makes them feel like since they have a different cultural capital, they are never going to fit in. It is hard when one of your idols makes fun of your looks in such a way! Kids looks are macrofactors which means they have no control over them, they cannot control the way their eyes are.

BRAINY ASIAN STEREOTYPE

By Chee Chee LeungEducation reporterSeptember 22, 2005

"The stereotype of the "brainy Asian" student may be a thing of the past, according to researchers who say some Chinese students are struggling with schoolwork in Australia.
Two Melbourne University researchers report that contrary to popular belief, not all Chinese international secondary students excel in maths, science and commerce. The researchers say that some Chinese international students are facing difficulties with the language and cultural demands of the Australian school curriculum.
"What was characterised in the past as the brainy Asian . . . it does not necessarily represent the groups that are coming through the school system," said Kristina Love, from the department of language and literacy education.
Dr Love said while many were motivated about studying, the perception that all Chinese students were hard-working was wrong, and some were sent to study in Australia because they were unlikely to gain entry to a Chinese university.
In 2003 and 2004, Dr Love and Dr Sophie Arkoudis - from the centre for the study of higher education - surveyed Chinese international students and their teachers at a Melbourne state school and a private school.
The pair said that while Chinese students were often presumed to be "hardwired" to do maths, sciences and commerce, the growing use of word-based problems in these subjects had proved a challenge.
"It's not just where to put the full stop and a comma, or words you can put in an electronic dictionary, it's much, much more complex than that," Dr Love said.
One business studies exam, for example, required analysis of a newspaper article with culturally specific phrases such as "sinking half a million dollars".
The researchers said more investigation was needed into how schools could help Chinese international students.
"Increasingly Australia is relying more on the education dollar and . . . with that goes an ethical responsibility to provide better support for the VCE subject teachers who are working with these international students," Dr Love said.
There are 935 full-fee-paying students from China enrolled in Victoria's government schools this year, with those in years 11 and 12 paying $11,550 a year.
According to the Federal Government's Australian Education International arm, in July there were 3061 students of Chinese nationality enrolled in Victorian schools"

Again, all the asians are getting stereotyped together again. They were all super smart and now they are not. This is not for everyone, and it could just be the way they are testing, but only the smart ones are allowed to stay in China and go to school? I too have sterotyped Asians as the brainy ones, who knew everything. This is being racist. So in American schools sometimes teachers practice instituionalized racism because of their expectations of the student.
